For Mexican, go to the mission district. Taqueria El Toro on Velencia at 18th is great (huge burritos) or on Mission at 25th there are two taquerias right next to each other, both are very good (they used to be partners until they had a fallingout).

For BBQ: Go to Oakland! Flints BBQ on Shattuck at Alcatraz. The line means something. Dont be offended by the poor treatment you are guarnteed to get from the service. Other good BBQ (also in Oakland) Doug's BBQ on San Pablo right by Hwy 580 (overhead). Also Carmen Family BBQ is a caribian based food in Berkeley on Adaline. SF doesnt really support good BBQ. Have Fun! Barb

I'll 2nd the El Toro as a great taqueria, but if you're looking for authentic Mexican dinners, I'd recommend Juan's in Berkeley.

Right on about Flint's (the best I've had anywhere). There are several locations in Oakland/Berkeley. Aside from the Shattuck Av location, the original is on E. 14th (not far from the Oakland Airport). I know they opened one on San Pablo a few yrs back as well.

Don't know these places, but missing from the list are Everett and Jones BBQs with several locations in East Bay and 1 in SF. E&J were the sisters who used to work for FLint's and invented that wonderful BBQ sauce they use! There's an E&J on San Pablo at University in Berkeley (also one in E. Oakland, but I don't recall exactly where? Near a BART station --- maybe Fruitvale?)

Almost true!! There is an E&J on 4th St in SF (on the way to the Cow Palace if memory serves!). Othere than that, stay away form SF BBQ .... you'll hear lot's of hype about Firehouse BBQ, but only from people who don't know enough to cross the Bay for the real thing in Oakland!!!
