Although I haven't been there myself, I've heard from several (unrelated) people that the Far Western Bar/Cafe in Gualala (around the Santa Maria area) is the best BBQ place in California. Santa Maria style BBQ, of course. You can't get too much more out of the way than that... The Far Western was mentioned in a recent Sunset magazine in an article about Santa Maria style BBQ. Mike

Upon further reflection, it might have been The Great Western Bar/Cafe. Well, I know "Western" was in the name at least (and how many restaurants are in Gualala?) Also, more than one person said: "Don't be {scared|turned off} when you enter, it really is good..." Mike

That's Guadalupe, not Gualala. They serve (or did serve) really excellent beef there, but it's broiled steak rather than Soul-style ribs, etc. For ribs and things like hot-links I suggest Flint's or Everette and Jones in the Oakland-Berkeley area. Hitching Post in Casmalia. Far Western in Guadalupe. Cooking is done over live oak, = not broiled. Fries at Jocko's are fantastic. GLC
