To me, by far the best (and the biggest) burritos in the Bay Area are at La Costena at Rengstorff and Old Middlefield in Mountain View. People have tried to convince that there were better ones, and I have tried a lot, but haven't been convinced. It is Take-Out only, it is in the back of a Mexican Variety store, it looks odd, you need to speak a little Spanish, but it is the best.

If you ever go to Sunnyvale then the best burritos I have ever had, even when I lived in Texas, are the veggie burritos at Hot And Mild, on the corner of Wolfe & Eveyln. $4.25 each. Very very good, especially without the sour cream. A taqueria to remember. Closed on Sunday.

Where in the world is whitey town ?

I've had good luck at Taqueria La Bamba in Mountain View. It's next door to La Costena on Rengstorff & Middlefield Road. Taqueria La Bamba also has fantastic soft tacos de carnitas.

MUCHOS! on Santa Clara and 2nd/3rd street in San Jose downtown is worth a try: they grill their own chicken, have a large variety of hot sauces (20 or so), have a large menu (El Gigante burrito is my favorite), and are clean.

That's on Old Middlefield, not vanilla Middlefield. Great burritos. Also try the pupusas. Anything con la lengua. And speaking of (with?) tongues, stop by a little mom and pop Salvadoran restaurant on Calderon in Mountain View called El Calderon for their thin-sliced tongue dish.

I really enjoy (when I am being Really Bad!!) the burrito's, and most eveything else, at La Azteca - 1531 Main St. - Redwood City.

Also, Mercado de la Torre, in Sunnyvale at Fair Oaks and Evelyn. This place won the Merc's Best Burrito contest, but I don't think La Costena was in the voting. :-) Worth a try, though.

You call Mahi Mahi, Lobster, and Swordfish burritos uninspired!?! I'll agree, their burritos are not what one is accustomed to around here, but I think they are a refreshing change from what's normally available. A burrito doesn't always have to be rice, beans, cheese and your choice of steak, chicken, or pork (THAT'S what I call uninspired).

While I'm on the subject of 'alternative' burritos, who besides Pancho Villa/El Toro (San Francisco) and La Costena has a vegeterian burrito beyond rice and beans? T&B's does (I'll count fish as vegetarian).

Also, T&Bs is in Belmont on Ralston, not RC (also one in San Mateo).

As it happens, I ate there (assuming we're talking about the El Faro's near Sunnyvale town center) for the first time tonight. One couple that was in our group apparently patronizes this place weekly. It's family-run and they've come to know the family from eating there so much. They said that the same family has one other restaurant, in Milpitas, but I've forgotten its name.

The atmosphere is completely unpretentious, like a modest coffee shop, but with several rooms. One nice touch was a couple of singers who moved from room to room playing guitar and singing songs in Spanish; a nice touch and not done obtrusively.

I thought the food was pretty good. I had a chicken dish (gallina en salsa?) and one of my dining companions had one chicken burrito and one pork burrito. The chicken in both dishes was excellent; moist and tasty. He said the pork was good but not outstanding. You get the standard refried beans and Mexican rice with the meal. Nothing fancy but good. Very reasonable prices -- about $6 for dinner. I'd happily go back there.

Hey Fellow ba.food-ers,

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Guadalajara Market (or maybe I missed it?)! The place has fabulous burritos! I love the chili relenos, mmmmm! Everything is home made, and as authentic as it gets.

For $4.25 you can get a burrito with your choice of two meats (or one chili releno and one meat), rice, beans, guacomole, tomatoes, home made hot sauce, lettuce, etc...

These things are so huge! If you can finish it, you won't have to eat for a few days afterwards!

It's in San Jose on Empire between 10th and 11th. (Not the best neighborhood, but worth the visit!)

Also in downtown San Jose, DO NOT MISS Super Taqueria. I think their burritos are the best if you don't want to eat a football's worth of burrito. They have a large assortment of meats, including a killer al pastor (adovada), along with tortas, and tacos, too. They're at 10th and William Street, near SJSU.

Another place to try is Casa Vicky on Julian and 17th. They have burritos, and breakfast (huevos rancheros, or huevos con chorizo), too.

Super Taq does wonderfully tasty tacos. Their carne asada tacos are heavenly, and their tongue tacos are enough to make the most diehard anti-tongue person change his or her opnion. :-)

If it doesn't make you sweat, it's not real food.
