If you appreciate quality dim sum and attentive, efficient service, the Yet Wah is a place to avoid.

We went there for lunch recently, arriving at 1130 am. Street parkings was impossible to find. We ended up in what we thought was a validated parking lot. Though we were seated promptly, everything went down hill from there. Tea took a long time to come. The glass of water we requested for our granddaughter never came.

The dim sum selection was brought around by servers on small trays at a slow and infrequent pace. The selection was very limited and quite ordinary. There weren't even any vegetable or vegetarian type dishes. The trays held few items and often were empty by the time that got from one part of the medium sized dining room to another. We were only able to find three items we thought we might like. However, they proved disappointing being bland and overcooked; mushy textured dim sum is not very appetizing or satisfying. Given the questionable quality of the food, the indifferent service, and the slow rate at which the dim sum was being brought out from the kitchen, we realized after 30 minutes of dining that we were not going to get any satisfaction there and decided to leave.

Upon paying our bill, the general manager told us in a very unfriendly tone that she was not going to validate our parking because we did not spend enough to meet their $15.00 minumum. We explained to her we were not aware of such a requirement. Furthermore, we explained to her the that we were not able to meet the minimum because of the poor and indifferent service there. She retorted that we should have spoken up (as if there was enough help and that they were interested.) Her contentious manner made it clear to us that it would be a waste of time to discuss the matter further with her so we paid the $4.00 parking fee ourselves.

It was obvious the general manager lacked the graciousness that one can usually expect from a manager in a good restaurant. At the least, if the general manager had any hosting skills at all, he or she could have told us about the $15.00 minumum before finalizing the bill and demanding payment. Also, she could have offered us an opportunity, with her assistance, to get some satisfaction from our luncheon experience there. Instead, it was clear that she just wanted to give our table to someone else.

If you want a pleasant contrast, try the Hong Kong Flower Lounge on Geary Blvd, just a few blocks away. The food and selection is excellent. The service is very professional and efficient. Unlike Yet Way, every one from the servers to several management persons walks the floor continuously attending to customer needs. The prices of the two restaurants are comparable, but nothing else is. Avoid Yet Wah.

That is certainly true. But Yet Wah is not a dim sum restaurant. You can find dependable, OK cooking at some Yet Wahs but the quality seems more unpredictable with time.

This neighborhood is impossible to park in at any time, day or night.

HK Flower Lounge is, IMO, a world away from Yet Wah. Yet Wah is one of the better chop suey chain restaurants. HKFL is one of the new (not new anymore) breed of restaurants that feature "authentic" cooking.

Having said that, my experiences at HKFL have not been as pleasant as yours, even when I went with a large Chinese family. Both times, the waiters were indifferent and the hostess rushed us through the meal. The first time, we arrived a full hour before closing time and were told as soon as we were seated that we had 5 minutes to order before the kitchen closed. The second time, we arrived in the early evening and were rushed nevertheless.

Taiwan House, on Clement near 6th Ave, is great. Stay away from those chains! Support the little places, generally better food and much better service! And yes, the parking is always a nightmare there. Here's a tip...park north of California Street and walk a block! Cheers - R!
