Djakarta - My favorite overall. The rijstaffel is probably good, judging from the quality of individual specialties that we've ordered. In fact we were so tempted by the specialties that we never got around to a rijstaffel. On Balboa Street near 7th Avenue. Singapore-Malysian Restaurant. Very good with a wide range of specialties (loved the rujak). Again, they may have a rijstaffel, but the specialties were the big draw. On Clement Street near 12th Avenue. The Straits Cafe. Once upon a time the Straits was a small, elegantly decorated storefront. Then they got the idea to move into much larger quarters. From what I hear, the food has been compromised in order to draw the masses. On Geary, a few blocks West of Masonic. The Bali. A newcomer that I haven't tried yet. The menu in the window shows pretty much the standard menu items you'd find at any rijstaffel place in Amsterdam, but little else. On Geary just West of Arguello. The Java. Avoid this one, if you enjoy either authenticity or quality. On Clement near 6th Avenue. The Indonesia Restaurant. Not really a full-scale restaurant, but an authentic "warung" (sort of a cafe). No full rijstaffel, but nice small meals. On Post Street near Jones (approx). Bakmi Indonesia Raya. Again, a little storefront specializing in Indonesian noodle dishes. Also has some nice soups and specialties like otak-otak (a fish cake that looks like the eponymous brains), gado-gado. Sort of a hangout for SF State Indonesian students. On Judah Street near 48th Avenue. ======================================================================== <Usual Disclaimer> "The best is the enemy of the good" - Voltaire Leon Traister ([email removed]) c/o Amdahl Corporation (408)737-5449 1250 E.
