What and where is Flint's? : Thanks. : Harvey Flint's is a BBQ joint on Shattuck Avenue in Oakland, 1 block south of the Starry Plough. Best BBQ in town. It's open till 2am, I think. There's usually a line, often out the door. The people behind the counter are not exactly...efficient, but I've always gotten what I wanted. They yell "next!" and you yell your order. They have Ribs (pork & beef), links, sliced beef, and chicken. They have a few drinks in the fridge, and they sell little sweet potato pies. You can get mild, medium, or hot sauce. IMHO, the medium is the best combination of flavor and zing. Best bets: anything but the chicken. There's another Flint's on E14th and 66th in East Oakland, but it isn't as good. There's yet another one on San Pablo, though I don't remember where, exactly. -- Peter [[email removed]]

Where to find BBQ in
First of all, let me say that I like Flint's. I used to work in Brkly till Midnight and then drive to Flint's, risk my life, all for a delighful experience affectionately named "Gut Rot." I like Everett and Jones more than Flint's because their hot sauce produces drops of sweat on my forehead. They also have roast pork which is very good. Also you get corn bread instead of that straight out of plastic bag slices at Flint's. But, But, But Any mention of Soul BBQ in the East Bay without talking about Doug's BBQ on San Pablo @ 580 overpass is incomplete. Doug's is by far the best Soul Q in the area. First, the breadth of the menu. Aside from the usual fare they have goat, lamb and this great Cajun Fried Turkey. Second, their sauce is as good as E+J and far better that flint's or the horrid Brother In Law's. They also have better side orders than any of the other places. And their portions are huge and combinations cheap. Please, if you like BBQ give Doug's a try and let me know what you think. By the way, Kudos to all the folks who told me about Central Texas BBQ. After two years of dreaming about it, I just got up one day and drove there for lunch. It was very good. Perhaps the best Texas BBQ I have had in NC. And Don the owner was very personable even though my SO only had Salad. Good Eatings Keyvan

I used to live 1/2 block away, and while the neighborhood isn't Kensington, it isn't very rough, as such things go. >I like Everett and Jones more than Flint's because their hot >sauce produces drops of sweat on my forehead. And Flint's hot sauce doesn't? You must have a talent for picking off nights - I've had Flint's sauce that I couldn't eat - and I'll eat habanero salsa by the spoonful :-). >They also have roast pork which is very good. If I wanted to put a label on it, it would be "Texas" rather than "Soul". Or perhaps not - but it certainly isn't the same thing, any more than Emil Villa's is, or the Western BBQ Cheeseburger at Carl's Jr. Or, for an even better example, Jamaican Family BBQ - are they still around, BTW? >First, the breadth of the menu. This makes Doug's great, IMHO. Even if they aren't quite as good as Flint's. >Second, their sauce is as good as E+J and far better that flint's Flint's sauce is ambrosia. E&J sauce is pretty good, but I've had bottled sauces that were better. Doug's sauce is different, far different, and doesn't bear comparison to the True Sauce. >Please, if you like BBQ give Doug's a try and let me know what you think. It's very, very good, and a great alternative. But it isn't in the same contest as Flint's, so I don't like to compare the two.
