If you want great Mexican, try La Fogata.

If you want THE BEST BBQ, try Rudy's in Leon Springs (don't miss it!)

Enjoy

La Fogata seems to be burning out as an innovative and high-quality restaurant, and going toward the very touristy. Sort of a Northside version of La Tierra. Used to be a place to visit for Mexican cuisine; now it strikes me as a place for mariachis and frozen Margaritas, a place former residents want to go because they remember it well. Go there if you like noise and glitz. I still suggest La Calesa for Mexican food and Los Barrios and Rosarios for Tex-Mex.

Rudy's BBQ in Leon Springs is absolutely awful. It is like a truck stop with swarming flies and warm potato salad. The meat really wasn't that great either. If you want great BBQ go to the County Line!

(However, while visiting Leon Springs visit Macaroni's for great Italian food --- the wine isn't all that bad either.)

In the North area try Fratelli's or Zingaro's for Italian. Both restaurants have moderate upscale ambience and quality food. Also, they have a mix of clientele ranging from area executives in suits to tourist casual and families . Both have menus for children. Their web sites are Fratelli's at http://www.fratellis.com and Zingaro's at http://www.zingaros.com

Chuck -

Although San Antonio is not known for its seafood (we are, after all, 2 hours from the coast :) there are a couple of good restaurants here that serve seafood: (these are not in any particular order)

1. Pappadeaux (specialties of Cajun-type cooking) - expect to wait at least 2 hours on V-day - no reservations IIRC. It's located on the access road of Loop 410 at Jones-Maltsberger.

2. Landry's (never been, but good reputation) - I think the wait there is rather long, too. - Not sure of location, but I think there's more than one.

3. Bayous Riverside (on the River Walk) excellent seafood - a little pricey, 517 N. Presa at College

4. Boudro's on the River Walk (also pricey) excellent selections of food - always crowded

5. Ernesto's 2559 Jackson Keller at Vance Jackson - excellent seafood - I think they take reservations.

6. Marbella Seafood Restaurant (in a strip mall - but Fabulous!) - a little pricey - not the same as Marbella in the Adam's Mark hotel downtown. This one is at 18130 San Pedro at Loop 1604. Reservations accepted - has some excellent Cuban sides (try the platanos fritos)

7. Water Street Oyster Bar at 7500 Broadway at Nacogdoches - it's not a romantic-type place - kind of waterfront atmosphere - large & noisy - but really good food.

A good WWW resource is the Texas Monthly magazine's restaurant reviews - here's the link for the San Antonio restaurants:

Hope you and your wife have a great trip. If you need any more San Antonio info - check out the Convention & Visitors' Bureau web site: www.sanantoniocvb.com - Lots of great things to do and see in our fair city!
