Here's the best Cue joints I know of in the greater Richmond, Virginia area. I'd be interested in any others anyone could suggest. King's BBQ, Rt. 1, Petersburg, VA This is the real thang! Carolina Style done true to Dixie! Slow wood smoke flavor you can smell before ya get there! Great onion rings too! ( there are 2 Kings in Petersburg, both are great. ) Cowling's Barbecue, Rt. 460, Waverly, VA One of the top 5 best chopped pork sandwiches I've ever had! ( if ya go, get a some Chocolate Pie too! Yum! ) Buz&Ned's Real BBQ, ( two locations ) Great pork sandwich and ribs to die for!!! They have a cart at Greentops Sporting Goods on Rt.1 near Parham open 10-6pm most days. and another on Boulevard near Broad beside CarPool but they're only open for lunch or catering orders M-F 11am-2pm. Big Daddy's Barbecue. Jahnke Rd, Southside Richmond Blues & BBQ Big Daddy's way!!!!! Rockin' good stuff! CafeMojo, Lakeside, VA ( if I do say so myself ;-) A private joint featuring BBQ, Blues & Caribbean specialties. By invitation only but some of the best cue in Richmond and over 100 brands of rum & tequila in stock. Sunday Blues Jams are legendary. Extra Billy's BBQ on Broad Street is pretty good for a nice sit down place. I like their ribs pretty good. Red,Hot&Blue Memphis Pit BBQ, Broad St, near Gaskins. A chain, but pretty dang good. Their "dry" ribs rock! The Smokey Pig in Ashland is okay but not great, a fair chopped pork sandwich but no ribs. They now have a ShortPump location too. Ones to avoid: Bill's Barbecue ( pork boiling local chain that SUCKS bigtime! ) Hawk's BBQ ( nothing special in any way at all ) Hanks Pit-cooked BBQ on Jeff Davis Hwy ( in a garbage pit maybe ) Zippie's BBQ on Boulevard ( get the cheeseburger & forget the bbq ) Lot's of folk rave about Pierce's BBQ in Lightfoot near Williamsburg but I think they're really weak. Pork doused in ketchup basically. No woodsmoke flavor and a lousy tomato-based sauce with no twang. There's also been about 3-4 new chain cue joints that have opened up near Innsbrook recently but I have not tried'em yet. I've been to a few down VA Beach way but nothing that really impressed me that much. I didn't care for Beach Bully's BBQ at all. There used to be a guy with a cart at 17th street that was good, but he's gone now. Bodine's in Hampton is just flat out awful. cap'n ron CafeMojo http://members.aol.com/cafemojo
Barbecue
Richmond, VA area BBQ
In perhaps an ill-thought moment of misjudgement I wrote: >Lot's of folk rave about Pierce's BBQ in Lightfoot near Williamsburg but I think they're really weak. Pork doused in ketchup basically. No woodsmoke flavor and a lousy tomato-based sauce with no twang. This is perhaps a bit harsh. They do make a generous & huge sandwich. They are a veritable institution in the Williamsburg area and I don't want to get lynched or anything. ;-) Let's just say you could certainly do worse than Pierce's for a bbq pork sandwich. I'd take'em over Bill's Barbecue anyday hand's down! ;-) Also, another good place I forgot in Richmond. They've been there forever and are a southside local legend. Benny's Barbecue!!!! Stratford Hills Shopping Center on Forest Hills Ave near Chippingham Pkwy. with apologies, cap'n ron
