I have to disagree with Mike about BBQ; while it does tend to be disappointing, another place to get really excellent 'cue is Feeder's at 1999 Cheshire Bridge Road (kind of a scuzzy area between Midtown and Buckhead). They are also cultivating a national reputation as a place to get really hot (peppery) stuff with their every-other-Tuesday "Hall of Flame" dinners.

I have Mike's attitude toward BBQ about Mexican restaurants in Atlanta. They are almost all agonizingly mediocre, with the usual burrito/enchilada/refried bean approach. The one exception is Sundown Cafe at 2165 Cheshire Bridge Road (about half a mile up from Feeder's). This is nouvelle North and Central Mexican cuisine, expertly done. If you like *real* Mexican food, this is the place to go. The crowd is generally trendy, and the prices are mid-range (meaning expensive by Mexican food standards).

Disagree in terms of BBQ: Low Country is good South Carolina BBQ. All of these locations are considered metro Atlanta area. Distances are approximate. For Georgia BBQ, try the following:

Melear's in Fayetteville (about 25 miles south of Atl) [chopped
pork barbecue, served with white bread and brunswick stew --
probably the most authentic, but not, perhaps, my favorite)
Sprayberry's in Newnan (about 45 miles south of Atl) [most famous of
the three; Lewis Grizzard used to brag about it all the
time. I haven't been, but it's listed in Jane and Michael
      Stern's Roadfood book)
Williamson's Brother's BBQ in Marietta (about 18 miles north of Atl --
my personal favorite, but somewhat expensive)
Big Ed's BBQ in Marietta (about 15 miles north of Atl -- not crazy
about the ribs but good, nonetheless, for regular barbecue)

Mexican: No strong opinions, because most Mexican in Atlanta that's preferred by the "natives" tends to be chains with inauthentic, at best, food. For a chain with inauthentic food that at least tastes good, try Rio Bravo. Locations all over the city, but within the city limits, try the Buckhead location. My personal favorite non-chain is Lupita's on South Cobb Drive in Smyrna. I don't know if it's particularly authentic, but it seems to have less "ground meat mixture" stuffed into everything than most.

Harold's barbecue is an old Atlanta institution. It has been in business in the same location (171 McDonough Blvd, about 3/4 of a mile west of the Federal Pen) for at least 45 years. In looking up their address for this post, I see that they also have a restaurant located in Jonesboro, south of Atlanta, which I did not know about.

The location on McDopnough Blvd has a big lunch trade composed mostly of folks driving from downtown Atlanta which is only a couple of miles to the north. This is a pretty rough section of town, though, and I would be hesitant about going there at night.

The place looks like a dump, but the barbecue is good and the brunswick stew is IMHO the best in Atlanta. With the brunswick stew you get a chunk of crackling corn bread. I don't think their selection of sauces for the barbecue is very good though and overall I would rate the place second best to the Lowcountry Barbecue which was mentioned by another poster.

Ditto, although I'm a little out of the loop these days since I only get to Ga. once or twice a year. But when there, we go to the Fresh Air BBQ, Rt.23, south of Jackson, GA (30/35 mi S. of Atl.) Lean, moist pulled pork, good hickory flavor served w/white bread & Brunswick stew. Sauce is vinegar/pepper/tomato based, not at all sweet. My ballcap says there's a branch in Macon, too, but have not been there.
