Re your request for good central Kentucky restaurants, make a side trip to Owensboro, Kentucky's version of "BBQ capitol of the world." There a few spots there, but the Moonlight BBQ is the classic. That part of KY is lamb country, and Owensboro is famous for its BBQ lamb.

Paduccah is Western KY, but there's a breakfast joint by the name of Skinheads (not the cult, they've been there for decades) that does the best red-eye gravy in the state. You can smell the country ham a-grilling from three blocks away.

Finally, cross the Ohio to Cincinatti, and wolf down a plate of five way chili from the original Skyline Chili Parlor.
