Stop in Fredericksburg, right off 95, 50 miles south of DC. There is a place on Route 1 called Allmans BBQ. Some of the best sandwiches you'll find.

Can't go along with your recommendation of Red Hot and Blue for two reasons. First, it is a proven fact that chains can not serve great barbecue. OK barbecue, maybe, but not great barbecue. Second, I tried a Red Hot and Blue in Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia. Had recently devoured a slab of dry ribs from Charlies Rendevous in Memphis. They were on the menu at Red Hot and Blue. Couldn't wait to try them.
What I got in place of the juicy, succulent Memphis dry ribs were ribs covered with a quarter inch of still dry, dry rub. When I complained to the waitress she told me that the chef didn't know how to fix them, had never seen or eaten the genuine article. Yeah, chain barbecue. Never again.

So, you ask, where does one get great BBQ in the Philadelphia area. For ribs, try Bubba's at the end of the trolley line on Baltimore Pike, Dwights at about 48th or 49th and Lancaster in West Philly and, though occasionally inconsistent, Ron's Ribs (formerly Miss B's Lawside) on the 1600 block of South Street. For pulled pork, smoked brisket, and, my favorite, smoked corned beef try the new Phoebe's on the 2100 block of South Street.
