I've got a perfect recommendation for you - right across the street is the Rockbottom Brewerey. It is a very nice place - don't judge by the sound of the name - it is really more of a restaurant than a brewerey, although they do brew their own quite tasty beer on the premisis. I had an order of St. Louis Style baby back ribs there that were among the best ribs I have ever had anywhere. They are dry rubbed with spices and slow roasted for 12 hours. The meat literally falls off the bone. They had a decent menu otherwise too.

For other meat and potato type places I can think of offhand, you are walking distance from Vons on 7th and Union (I think). Great slow roasted prime rib and other meats and chicken. Also great martinis and manhattans ;)
