I grew up in the Piedmont (central, near foothills) area of North Carolina-- Shelby, to be precise. I was weaned on the *best* BBQ anywhere--Alston Bridges BBQ. They have the tastiest hush puppies, *real* BBQ slaw (the red kind, _not_ the green!!!), and delectable (my preference) chopped pork. Of course, they have hot dogs (with homemade chili) and fries, etc., but this is THE place to go for "down home" BBQ!!! They're located near the hospital in this small city, on or near Grover St. Anyone could tell you where they are (or at least where the hospital is!!). If you venture that way and try their offerings, tell them that Albert Suttle's niece, Billiee from Atlanta, recommended the place. (My uncle ran _the_ drugstore there for 1,000 years, ate at Alston's all the time---believe me, they remember him!!) Enjoy and "pig out!!!" bp-p

BBQ in NC
Billiee, I agree that Alston's has the best BBQ in the Carolinas and that's not just because my sister married Alston's youngest son. I also remember Albert. After he sold his drug store, he worked awhile with another of my brother's-in-law in the advertising business.

Lexington #1 gets all the press - and is very good, please don't misunderstand me - but Bridge's serves the best barbecue in a state where the worst you can get is better than the best anywhere else. Check out Roadfood.com at http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Review_Writeup.asp?Review_ID=192&Type=1 for info. A little out of the way, but well worth it. Hope you enjoy your trip. Feel free to let the board know how you enjoyed the 'cue.

I gather from your question that you're somewhat familiar with the area. Are you in or from western North Carolina? Michael F. wrote in message news:... > Bridges downtown or on the bypass?

This is the place where the "Lexington Style" barbecue started. de-lurking here. "Steve" [email removed] asks: >Where are you eating, Frankie's? Surely you jest? (shudder) ...even the tourists don't go there. ;-) The best BBQ I've ever had in Va Beach was from a guy that used to sell on the street from a cart at the corner of 17th & Pacific. He smoked his cue right there in the open on a small portable smoker rig. I have not seen him in a few years though. Man, he was great. A wild-eyed hippie cuehead with integrity and a pickup truck full of split hickory. Since then - the best BBQ I've had in Va Beach is about a 40 minute drive out of Norfolk down Route 460 to Cowling's BBQ in Waverly, VA. This is also the real deal - slow low woodfire smoked barbecue served on a toasted bun with a really good NC style sauce. Whatever you do - don't forget to try a slice of their homemade chocolate pie! ron@cafemojo

If near Shelby the Lexington style was transferred to Shelby many years ago by the Bridges brothers. Best accessible would be Bridges on US 74 east of east of town on the right near the mall. A little pricey, but good eats! They sell out almost every day so don't go late. Open Sundays selling Saturday's Q. Usually closed by 5pm. In Asheville, try 3 Little Pigs, a local institution. In Charlotte try the Patterson residence. Enjoy. Drew Patterson
