It's not "new", unless you consider 15 years new. It's somewhat like
you've heard, with juke boxes/oldies, chrome & vinyl decor, and young waitresses with short uniforms, etc. It's open 24 hours/day, and seems to be quite busy. Food is burgers, malts, sandwiches, meatloaf/mashed potatoes, etc. No liquor/beer/wine. Inexpensive. In summary, a cute, fun place for breakfast, lunch, or a late meal, but not fancy.
16th Street, north of Camelback Road.

I've not been there, but I thought the 5&Diner was more of a chain-type, burger joint - nothing special. Of course, I could be wrong! The one I know of is in the Pavillions Power Center which is on Pima Road at Indian Bend in Scottsdale. If you go, aim for a Saturday night - they've got a neat "cruise night" in the parking lot with bunches of old restored cars.

At least it used to be local. They also had Willy & Guillermo's (Mexican), Oscar Taylor's (upscale yuppie), Ed Debevic's (another 50's diner motif but with attitude), and the Lunt Avenue Marble Club. All are gone except Ed Debevic's and the 5 and Diners.

The other 5 & Diner locations I know of are on 16th St just 1/2 mile north of Camelback Rd. and on Bell Road and approx. 77th Ave in the Arrowhead shopping area.

Friends of mine tell me the 5 & diner is good for breakfast, but I don't do eggy things so I couldn't comment. Lunch and dinner are OK but no big deal as far as I'm concerned. They tend to be heavy handed with salt and there is enough grease to remind me of greasy spoons. The last two times I went the service also left a lot to be desired. This was at the 16th street location. I've not been back.

Ed Debevic's is at 20th St and Camelback on the south side of Town and Country Shopping Center. The food is also 50's diner menu and so is the decoration and waitress's garb. If you don't mind the 'entertainment' where the waitresses sing along with the jukebox, chew gum, and are just a touch on the smart-mouth side, I'd recommend Ed Debevic's. Their chili is as good as Mom's and their fried chicken is also good. Also in that shopping center is Baby Kay's which features cajun food and is quite good (the owner is from Louisiana and this is the closest to New Orleans style food we've found here.)

My opinions only, but we do eat out a lot.
