Welllllllllllllllllllllll, seeing as how I grew up in B'ham I may be able to throw a few suggestions your way.

Ollie's would be great except for the fact that it is now closed, so forget about them. Find a supermarket, though, and buy a bottle of their sauce. It is still being sold, luckily.

Dreamland on the South Side is always a good choice and is known far and wide for their ribs, though Ginger claims the portions are small. I haven't eaten there in a couple of years so I can't say for sure either way.

The Golden Rule in Irondale makes a great sandwich. (Order the sliced with some outside meat.) The ribs are pretty damned good too. This was our family favorite and it is still my Mother's favorite as she still lives in B'ham.

For a very different but very good hamburger try one of Milo's locations. Order the iced tea half and half though, unless you really like it sweet. The fries aren't bad either.

For chili dogs see if you can hit Gus's in Crestline.

For a really good Po'Boy Try a place on the Southside called Ranelli's Deli. I love this place. A bit of a hole in the wall, but worth it. They put a muffaletta style olive salad on the sandwich that is truly out of this world, IMHO.

For a night out at an old B'ham standard, try John's. The trout almondine is the same as it has been for 30 or more years and my Mom still goes there. Be prepared to wait in line for a table, though.

For good southern, cafeteria style lunch fare there used to be a place downtown called Fife's. A true greasy spoon but great for the Southern fried meat and vegetable type stuff.

And of course there is the Whistle Stop Cafe in Irondale, made famous by Fannie Flagg. Good fried green tomatoes. I believe I read they serve about 150 lbs of em a day. Mighta been more.

I know this is more than you were askin' but I just can't help myself. Have fun! Eat well!
