This print presents D.D. Barnard, identified in its title as a representative from New York. Daniel Dewey Barnard, a Whig lawyer from Albany, served in the U.S. House of Representatives in the late 1830s and early 1840s, and he later served as American minister to Prussia. The record gives no date, and the associated name on the shelflist card, Fenderich, is unverified, so the printmaker and the year of production remain uncertain. Portrait prints of this kind were often made to circulate a politician's likeness among supporters or to accompany published biographies.
