Bennington, Vermont, in 1887 was a mill town in the Walloomsac valley of the state's southwest corner, where woolen mills and other factories along the river supplied much of the local work. The Bennington and Rutland Railroad tied the town to the wider rail network, carrying freight and travelers between the factories and markets beyond the hills. Residents also took pride in the town's place in the Revolutionary War, since the Battle of Bennington in 1777 was fought just outside the village. In 1887 the planning for a large memorial on the battle site was well underway, and the town's civic life centered on churches, schools, and the commercial streets around the green.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Bennington, Vermont, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
