Bellows Falls, Vermont, in 1886 was a river and railroad town built around the rapids of the Connecticut River, where the falls had powered mills for generations before a canal opened in 1802 to carry boats past the water. By the 1880s its factories and mills drew workers from the surrounding hill farms, and rail lines meeting in the village moved finished goods toward Boston and New York. Residents knew the place as a working river town, with freight yards and mill buildings along the banks. The map shows the streets climbing from the water toward the churches and schools, a community still shaped by the river that had given it a living.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Bellows Falls, Vermont, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
