A grocer stands behind a hanging Chatillon scale, the brass-trimmed dial reading out the weight of a bunch of bananas, a detail that sets this picture apart from the usual market views of produce piled on tables. Chatillon scales, made by the John Chatillon & Sons firm in New York, were a common sight in American stores and markets from the late 1800s into the 1900s, when bananas were becoming a cheap everyday fruit sold by weight rather than by the bunch. The scene shows how shoppers and sellers settled prices at a single glance on the dial. Its market setting places it among the rural and small-town commerce that the gallery's farm and market subjects document.
