A young man, drawn in a stiff, formal pose, holds a bouquet of hearts above a sentiment printed in plain type: "To my dear Valentine." Cards of this kind were a staple of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when printers turned out sentimental greetings in large numbers and buyers sent them through the mail or left them for a sweetheart by hand. The lettering and the idealized figure reflect the period's taste for romantic convention, in which affection was often expressed through set phrases and familiar symbols rather than personal words. Notice how the hearts do the emotional work here, standing in for sentiment the sender may not have known how to put into his own language.
