Kid Gleason, the Chicago White Sox manager shown here, was William J. Gleason, a former second baseman whose nickname came from his small stature. The 1919 date places the portrait in the season when Gleason was running the club that would soon face the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series, a team later tied to the Black Sox scandal. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented public figures and events in the early twentieth century. Its survival as a glass negative, with some surface streaking from age, is typical of that era's photographic plates.
