Few flowers carry an American diplomat's name as well as this one. The poinsettia, shown here as *Poinsettia pulcherrima*, takes its genus name from Joel Roberts Poinsett, who sent plants of the Mexican shrub home to South Carolina while serving as the first U.S. minister to Mexico. This hand-colored etching appeared in London in 1838 as a plate in *Paxton's Magazine of Botany*, a periodical that introduced British gardeners to exotic plants. Its showy red bracts are modified leaves rather than petals, a detail worth noticing when comparing the plate with the living plant.
