The road in this view heads toward Maryland, linking the small river town of Harpers Ferry to the far bank of the Potomac. The town sits where the Shenandoah meets the Potomac, a spot that made it a useful crossing for trade, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and later armies. Harpers Ferry changed hands several times during the Civil War, and its steep river gorge and tight streets made roads like this one strategically important. Anyone interested in the period can see in such a scene how closely transportation and conflict were tied together in this corner of the Potomac valley.
