The only identifying detail here is a name, "Geo. Lawrence," and the cataloguers note that even this comes from unverified information written on the negative or its caption card, so the sitter and the occasion remain uncertain. The glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency founded by George Grantham Bain in 1899 that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its collection, now held by the Library of Congress, shows how press photographers worked when glass plates were still a common medium for news pictures.
