The soft oval vignette, fading from the sitter's coat into a plain background, marks this portrait of a bearded officer as a studio piece rather than a field photograph. Oval vignettes were a popular format in the 1860s and 1870s, when photographers printed head-and-shoulders likenesses on small cards that could be traded, displayed, or kept in albums. Officers often posed in uniform for such portraits, using the coat to show rank and service to families at home. Hung among other images on Gettysburg and Confederate themes, it offers a quieter view of the period, when military men sat for the same cameras as everyone else.
