The record does not name the sitter, which sets this studio portrait apart from the battlefield scenes around it on this board. Officers often sat for portraits like this before a painted backdrop, and the small prints, known as cartes de visite, were popular with soldiers and their families during the war. The gallery places it within its Day 1 group, tied to July 1, 1863, when Union cavalry under John Buford held the roads west of town against advancing Confederate infantry. The crisp uniform and posed stance make a useful contrast with the muddy, worn look of the field photographs.
