Palmer's Prize Pack is a fruit crate label, and the name on it is the detail that sets this one apart from the many apple labels on the board. Labels like this were printed to be pasted on the ends of wooden shipping crates, where they served as a brand that buyers in distant markets could recognize at a glance. Yakima, in south-central Washington, became one of the state's major apple-growing centers after irrigation projects opened the Yakima Valley to orchards in the early 1900s. Crate art of this kind, with bright color lithography, was a key part of how growers competed for shelf space, and it remains a useful record of how the region marketed its fruit.
