The words "Free to the People" carved over the entrance mark this as one of the Carnegie libraries, the public reading rooms that Andrew Carnegie funded across the United States and abroad in the early twentieth century. Carnegie, a steel magnate who had grown up poor in Scotland, believed that free access to books could give ordinary working people the education he had lacked. Pittsburgh, his hometown's industrial neighbor and the center of his steel empire, received some of the earliest and largest of these gifts. The inscription on the facade expresses that philanthropic idea directly, and it is worth noticing how the building's stone and classical design were meant to make a public library feel as permanent as a bank or courthouse.
