Steam locomotives printed in bold, simplified shapes were a staple of rail travel advertising in the early twentieth century, when railroads competed hard for passengers and freight. Here the engine is drawn less as machinery than as a symbol of speed and power, with its smoke rendered in sweeping, billowing curves that suggest motion even on a still sheet. Posters like this one typically used flat areas of color and strong outlines so they could be read from a platform or a passing street. Look closely at how the smoke fills the upper part of the composition and pulls the eye along the line of the train.
