The slogan "Rivets are bayonets - Drive them home!" sets this poster apart by treating a shipyard tool as a weapon of the war. Issued in 1917, the year the United States entered World War I, it was produced under the United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation, which had been created to build merchant vessels fast enough to replace cargo ships lost to German submarine attacks. The poster asks workers to see their daily labor on the hulls as direct support for the troops overseas, and it reflects the wartime push to make industrial work feel as urgent as the fighting itself.
