Yakima Chief was a label brand of the Yakima Fruit Growers Association in Washington's Yakima Valley, and this crate label promotes evaporated apples, a dried product that let growers ship a concentrated fruit crop well beyond the harvest season. Fruit crate labels of this era were built to catch the eye of buyers stacked on grocery shelves and in wholesale warehouses, so the bright lithography, bold lettering and brand name did the selling work before a single crate was opened. Labels like this one now serve as a record of the Pacific Northwest orchard economy and of the commercial art that grew up around it.
