Draped in a flag and ringed with flowers, the woman in this postcard is presented less as an individual than as a symbol of national pride. Patriotic cards like this were widely mailed in the early twentieth century, when printers turned out inexpensive color lithographs for holidays, anniversaries and wartime sentiment. Sending one was a small, public way to show loyalty, and the flag and blossom motifs were meant to be read at a glance. Look closely at the lettering and border, which often reveal the card's printer and the occasion it was designed to mark.
