Piles of watermelons stacked high on the ground make up the centerpiece of this scene, with workers moving among them at what appears to be a open-air produce market. Melons were a major cash crop in parts of the American South and Southwest, and market days like this one were where growers sold their harvest to wholesalers and local buyers. Notice how the heavy fruit is heaped for display and transport, and how the workers' posture and clothing reflect the manual labor that moved these crops from field to market in the early twentieth century.
