Few details survive for this glass negative beyond its title, which places it at a wall and gate in Peking, the city now called Beijing. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of images produced by the Bain News Service, a photo agency active in New York from the early 1900s that sold pictures to newspapers and magazines. Its title comes from caption cards the agency wrote, and the Library of Congress notes that this information has not been verified. Walls and gates were among the most recognizable features of Peking's old imperial layout, so the image offers a glimpse of a city that agency readers would have encountered mainly through such pictures.
