Clara Kutroff and Marie Wagner are named in this 5-by-7-inch glass negative, with a caption the Bain News Service itself marked as unverified. Kutroff is remembered as a labor organizer in New York's garment trades in the early twentieth century, a period when strikes and union drives brought many immigrant women into public view. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied newspapers with thousands of such plates from about 1900 into the 1920s. The record gives no date, so the occasion behind the portrait remains uncertain.
