Curled tight like the scroll of a violin, the young frond shown here is a fiddlehead, the unopened shoot of a fern, rendered in a few confident woodblock lines. The record dates the sheet tentatively to around 1798, while its subject headings place the ferns in Japan during the 1800s, a span that falls within the Edo period, when woodblock printing flourished in books and verse collections. Printed pages of this kind often paired pictures with poetry, which the catalog's poetry heading suggests here. The two-page format hints that the sheet was meant to be read as part of a larger work.
