A half-length daguerreotype from 1844 puts us at the very start of photographic portraiture, only a few years after Louis Daguerre's process was made public in 1839. The sitter's name has been lost, so the picture survives as a record of a face rather than a biography. Exposures then ran from several seconds to a minute or more, which is why sitters held still with head rests and tight expressions. Each daguerreotype is a single, mirror-like image on a silver-coated copper plate, so its appearance shifts with the angle of light and it cannot be reproduced without a new sitting.
