Few early portraits survive with as much tonal detail as this half-length daguerreotype of an unidentified man, dated 1844. The process, announced publicly in France only five years earlier, produced a single mirror-like image on a silvered copper plate, so every example is one of a kind rather than a print from a negative. Sitters in the 1840s often had to hold still for several minutes in bright light, and the sharpness of the face against the softer background reflects that demanding technique. The man's identity has been lost, which is common for daguerreotypes, since the cases and plates were rarely labeled.
