The fox in this 1840 woodcut is Martin Van Buren, whose hometown of Kinderhook, New York, gave him the nickname "the Kinderhook fox," and the title announces him finally snared. It belongs to the crowded run of campaign prints from that year's election, when Whig supporters promoted William Henry Harrison with log cabins and hard cider while attacking the incumbent president. The record also names Andrew Jackson and New Orleans, a nod to Van Buren's long ties to Jackson's political circle. The sheet was published in New York by Huestis & Co., combines woodcut and letterpress, and was tinted with watercolor.
