Among the many apple labels on this board, this one stands out for its bird of paradise, a tropical bloom and bird far removed from the orchards the crate would have come from. Paradise, as a brand name, was a common choice for citrus and fruit growers who wanted to suggest abundance and an idyllic place of origin. Crate labels like this were printed in bright chromolithographic colors to catch the eye of buyers at railway depots and grocery stalls, when fruit was shipped across the country in wooden crates and the label was often the only advertisement a grower could afford. Look closely at how the ornate lettering and exotic imagery were meant to sell an ordinary crate of apples as something special.
