Gainer's Celebrated Spanish Bitters was one of many patent tonics sold in the decades after the Civil War, when a bottle of alcohol-based "bitters" could be promoted as a cure for nearly any complaint. The word "Spanish" was a common selling point, suggesting an exotic remedy from abroad even when the recipe was homemade. Posters like this one were pasted on fences, storefronts, and depot walls, where railroad travelers saw them while waiting for trains. The "P.K." in the title is not explained in the record, so the printer or designer behind it is unclear.
