The Lincoln Monument in Springfield, Illinois, stands over the tomb of the 16th president and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, in Oak Ridge Cemetery on the city's north side. Here the view is dressed for a commemoration, with flags hung along the approach and wreaths laid at the base, a common sight at the monument on Lincoln's birthday and other civic occasions. Dedicated in 1874, the granite memorial drew crowds of pilgrims for decades, and images like this one show how the site became a focal point for national mourning and remembrance.
