The room is a library interior, with tall bookshelves lining the walls and a wooden reading desk set in the middle of the floor. Libraries of this kind, with open shelving and a central desk for readers, were a common feature of public and institutional reading rooms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when access to books was widening beyond scholars and the wealthy. The arrangement shows how such spaces were laid out so that a single attendant could oversee both the shelves and the people using them. Look closely at the shelf spacing and the desk's construction to get a sense of the craftsmanship that went into these rooms.
