A tall, light-filled reading room with galleried bookshelves rising on several levels sets this scene apart from the open-stack libraries of later decades. The long wooden tables run down the floor in orderly rows, and the iron balustrades along the upper tiers show how the builders packed as many volumes as possible into a single room without giving up easy access to them. Rooms like this were built to serve readers who spent hours at their tables, with the shelves kept in view overhead.
