A long reading room with a balcony gallery runs the length of the picture, its shelves rising to the ceiling and its rows of wooden tables filling the floor in tidy lines. The arrangement of a gallery-lined hall like this was a favored plan for large public and university libraries in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, since it put a great number of books within easy reach of readers without taking up extra floor space. Such rooms were built to be quiet, well lit and orderly, and the repeated tables and railings show how carefully the space was organized for study. Looking closely, the rhythm of the shelves and the open sightlines give a clear sense of how libraries of that era expected people to gather and read together.
