Union Square, in Manhattan, is the setting here, where the title places a flower market on the eve of Easter. Street stalls selling blooms, especially lilies and potted spring plants, were a familiar sight in New York at the holiday, when households bought flowers for church and the home. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a press photo agency that supplied New York newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified notes on the negative, so the exact year is uncertain.
