Children at a table with jars of Thurber's preserves and jellies anchor this color lithograph, which was printed as an advertising card, a form that grocers handed out to customers. Trade cards like this were cheap to produce in quantity once chromolithography matured in the mid-19th century, and they often pictured children, pets, or idealized domestic scenes to make a brand friendly. The Forbes Company, credited on the card, was a Boston lithographic firm active in this trade. The date is uncertain, so the card most likely dates from somewhere between 1850 and 1900.
