The Green Man is a foliate face, a carved or painted head whose features are built from or sprouting with leaves, and it appears most often in medieval English church stonework and in later Gothic-revival decoration. Usually it is a male face with oak, ivy or vine leaves spilling from the mouth, nose or eyes. Its meaning has been debated for generations: some scholars read it as a pagan nature spirit absorbed into Christian architecture, others as a symbol of rebirth and the cycle of growth. Notice how the leaves seem to grow out of the face itself, which makes the image feel alive rather than simply ornamental.
