A small winged child fairy cradles a green dragon, a pairing that brings together two very different figures from folklore. Winged children owe much to the cherub, the infant angel that Renaissance painters adapted from older traditions, and later illustrators carried that look into fairy scenes. Colored pencil allowed artists fine control over the soft shading of skin and the feathery edges of wings, which suits the gentle, dreamlike mood. The board places it among angels and fairies because the wings link it to sacred imagery, even though the dragon comes more from legend than from religion.
