A boy stands beside Santa Claus and a reindeer on this Season's Greetings postcard, so the picture is built around a child meeting the holiday's most familiar figure rather than around Santa alone. Holiday postcards like this one were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when printers turned out large runs of cards with festive scenes and short printed wishes that people mailed to friends and family. The pairing of a child with Santa and a reindeer reflects how the figure had by then settled into the everyday image of Christmas, with the reindeer drawing on the sleigh-and-team tradition that became popular in American and British holiday imagery.
